I’ve had regular updates of this little gem going up on my facebook page since I started working on it, and I’m very pleased to say I’ve finally decided I’m done with it.
I started working on this on the 15th of December and was hoping to have it done by Christmas, only a little over a week over schedule and I completed it yesterday. To be fair it did have to compete for my attention, and somehow Chickens tend to win my attention a little easier.
This was a fun piece to complete. I was going for as much realism as possible with this and used the grid method to try and make sure everything was in the right place. I tend to just try and free hand things entirely, but that doesn’t always help with learning, and can often create the sense of never being able to draw something right. The grid method helps to break things down square at a time.
I used my Royal & Langnickel graphite pencils to complete this. I like these pencils so far, although haven’t really had much to compare them to. I recently brought the Faber-Castell 9000 graphite pencils set, and can’t wait to try them out.
The paper I used was the one I most commonly use as I like it’s smooth finish and the level of detail possible to achieve – The Daler Rowney Hotpressed aquafine smooth watercolour 140lb A4 paper.

I’d had the idea floating round in my mind for this design for some time, stuck in there with all those other ideas that are all fighting to become reality. I wanted something reasonably quick to complete after the eagle picture, so I decided to attempt to get this done. Drawing out the lettering and colouring them in really reminded me of my old graphics classes and how much I both loved and hated typography. This was drawn on my Daler Rowney A4 65lb Sketch paper, using Staedtler pigment liners.
This was done in the same way most of my pictures lately have been, using both Polychromos and Luminance coloured pencils and blending using Gamsol (which is a paint thinner), and was created on Daler Rowney Aquafine hot pressed 140lb watercolour paper. I like using this paper because it’s nice and solid, allows a decent amount of layers, doesn’t seem to buckle at all under water or paint thinner, and also adds a bit of texture because it’s not completely smooth, which works out pretty well when drawing animals I think.
So a few people may know I’ve been working on some commissions lately. Well these four have now been done and given to the person they were intended for as a gift by the person who actually commissioned them. I’m pretty happy with how they’ve turned out.
They were all done using Luminance and Polychromos coloured pencils.
Well the weather’s quite terrible where I come from today, so here’s a nice little bright almost summery picture to hopefully brighten things up. This was just a little practice paint as I was mainly experimenting on trying to get the tone and shading right on the Rose.

Watercolour painting created today using my Sakura Koi Water colours pocket field sketch box. I only used 4 colours in this; yellow ochre, ultramarine blue, light red and a little burnt umber. It was painted on A5 Winsor & Newton cold pressed 140lb watercolour paper. There was no reference photo for this.
I started this last night and finished it today, one of the best and worst things about being slightly nocturnal, all the best ideas and the inspiration to do things comes at silly times of night.

I got the reference photo for this little guy off of morguefile. I began by drawing out the branch with a watercolour pencil, using number 61 which is Copper Beech, I used this as it’s a mid range between the darker and lighter colours I would be using on the branch. I then placed in the outline for the bird using number 39 Turquoise Blue. Once I’d done that and was happy it was looking accurate, I began to block in the colours of brown for the branch. I used several different shades and overlapped a lot of them to aid with them mixing once I added the water, once I was happy that it looked like a reasonably realistic branch (I obviously wasn’t going for total realistic detail with this one) I used one of my aqua brushes to blend the browns together, being careful not to overwork any of the areas as the colour moves a little too much and risks losing some of the values and shades when that happens.
After I’d finished the branch I started adding the colour to the bird, I used greys, white and blues, including the one I did the outline with to do the majority of the birds colours, I also used raw sienna and burnt sienna for the orange sections of the feathers, then using my aqua brush I blended the colours together. Making sure that the brush strokes went in the same directions as the feathers. Once it’d had dried I then picked out highlights and darkened some areas by using my brush to directly take colour from the selected pencils to get finer detail.
When I was done with the bird I went through my background adding various greens, and blues including the ones used on the bird, overlapping several areas, I also added a brown in there to create the look of possible trees. Then I just used my aqua brush on it, making sure the brush strokes didn’t all go in the same way. I was going for more of a blurry look with the background to help make the bird and the branch stand out.
One of the reasons I love watercolour pencils so much is the ability to create quick projects with them.
Drawn for a card, outlined with pigment liners and then painted with watercolour. I used my Kuretake Gansai Tambi Japanese Watercolour Paints for this and it was the first time I’ve really used them. They seem to be very pigmented and I like the look the colours have. I was using one of my aqua brushes for this but I think for these particular paints a normal paintbrush and water would be easier due to just how hard the colour can be to get off of an aqua brush.
This was certainly fun to paint and it was my first time experimenting with using my liners and watercolour and I love the effect it’s created. 🙂
Created using watercolour pencils to make a card for someone. I did this in many different layers so that different colours came out well and showed depth. The feathers had several different oranges, reds, browns and yellows used on them and the dark bits of the feathers had purple, blue and green used on them, this was to show the variations in colour and reflection as well as to make it not look as flat as it would have with just black on it.
